Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful Answers for Our Patients

What is Dentistry?

Dentistry is a field of healthcare dedicated to diagnosing, preventing, and treating conditions that affect the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaw. Maintaining good dental health is important for overall well-being, as oral health is closely connected to the health of the entire body.

What is a Dentist?

A dentist is a trained healthcare professional who focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing issues related to oral health. Dentists complete years of advanced medical and dental education to provide safe and effective care. After completing their studies, dentists receive either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree.

Some dentists continue their education by specializing in certain areas of dentistry. For example, pediatric dentists focus on dental care for children from infancy through their teenage years. Other dental specialties include:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Dentistry – focuses on oral surgery, radiology, and pathology.
  • Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics – focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and jaw alignment.
  • Endodontics – specializes in root canal treatments and care of the tooth pulp.
  • Periodontics – focuses on preventing and treating gum disease.
  • Prosthodontics – specializes in restoring and replacing teeth with crowns, dentures, and implants.

Are Regular Dental Cleanings Necessary?

At CopperMine Dental Studio, we understand that busy schedules can make it difficult to plan dental visits. While brushing twice a day and flossing regularly can help prevent many oral health concerns, these habits alone may not remove all plaque and bacteria.

Routine dental cleanings, usually recommended every six months, play an important role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup that daily brushing may miss, while also allowing dental professionals to detect potential problems early before they become more serious.

Do I Need to See a Dentist Even if My Teeth Feel Fine?

Even if your teeth feel healthy, regular dental visits remain very important. At CopperMine Dental Studio, patients are generally encouraged to schedule dental checkups twice a year because many dental conditions can develop without obvious symptoms.

Routine visits help identify potential issues early and prevent them from becoming painful or costly in the future. These appointments also help maintain the health and appearance of your smile while supporting long-term oral wellness.

What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning at CopperMine Dental Studio

Dental cleanings are typically recommended every six months to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. During your appointment at CopperMine Dental Studio, your visit may include:

  • A comprehensive oral examination
  • An oral cancer screening
  • Digital X-rays to help detect cavities or other concerns
  • A professional cleaning to remove plaque, tartar, and buildup from the teeth

At What Age Should I Bring My Child to See the Dentist?

Dental professionals, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommend bringing children for their first dental visit around six months of age or when their first tooth begins to appear.

Early dental visits allow the dental team at CopperMine Dental Studio to evaluate your child’s developing teeth and provide helpful guidance on proper oral care and future dental needs.

When Should I Change My Toothbrush?

It is generally recommended to replace your toothbrush every three months to maintain proper oral hygiene. If you use an electric toothbrush, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how often the brush head should be replaced.

Individuals with gum disease or certain oral health conditions may need to change their toothbrush more frequently. After each use, rinse the toothbrush thoroughly with hot water to remove bacteria and help keep it clean.

How Do I Know if I Have Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, develops when plaque and bacteria accumulate around the teeth and gums. If not treated in the early stages, this buildup can lead to inflammation and infection of the gum tissues.

Certain factors such as smoking, tobacco use, teeth grinding, medications, and genetics may increase the risk of developing periodontal disease. Advanced stages of gum disease can eventually lead to bone loss and tooth loss if left untreated.

Maintaining daily brushing and flossing habits, along with regular dental visits every six months, can help reduce the risk of gum disease. Common signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Abscessed teeth
  • Extreme tooth sensitivity
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Loose teeth or tooth loss
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Receding gum line

If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact CopperMine Dental Studio as soon as possible. You can call us at 520-625-1600 to schedule an appointment. Your oral health is our priority.
